A música e os amores de João de Deus: Um estudo de caso sobre as interações música – narrativa na Trilogia de Deus de João César Monteiro

Abstract

The three films analysed in this research—Recollections of the Yellow House (1989), God’s Comedy (1995), and The Spousals of God (1999)—are built from a set of citations taken from different contexts. With those, João César Monteiro forms the fictional world where João de Deus (interpreted by the director) lives. As with many other components of these works, the music is taken from pre-existing pieces that are used in a different context and (re)signified to enhance certain elements of the narrative. In this article, I work on the interaction between music and the amorous relations developed by the character João de Deus. The protagonist engages in relationships with several women that are accompanied by music from different composers. Those musical pieces establish a symbiotic system with the remaining elements of the audio-visual by changing and being changed by them. This article constitutes a case study on the interactions between music and narrative in God’s Trilogy.
