Abstract

The codex P-Ln PBA 82 is a handwritten book of sixteen cantatas for solo voice and continuo by several Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan composers. It is one of the most important handwritten sources of the repertoire of the so-called cantatas humanas, pieces with secular themes in the Spanish language, which developed from the tonos humanos of the seventeenth century, gradually incorporating influences from Italian cantatas. This article describes the manuscript and presents information regarding the composers included in the anthology, the owner of the manuscript, the importance of Spanish as a cultured language, and the reception of the manuscript and the repertoire for voice and continuo in Lisbon in the first quarter of the eighteenth century.
