Abstract

The Setaro family played an important role in the establishment of opera in Portugal during the eighteenth century. Its presence in Oporto has been studied by several researchers. In this paper I present new facts on what preceded the trip to Oporto, meaning the arrival of the Setaro family in Lisbon, together with Italian singers and dancers. This troubled and difficult journey bore witness to the desire to restore opera to the stage after the earthquake of 1755.
