Abstract

The organs of the Mafra Basílica have not hitherto been the object of any detailed or genuinely informative study. Only sporadic articles have appeared, of a historical artistic or generally informative kind, and organological studies produced during the past ten years lack any great detail or have been published in periodicals that are difficult to obtain. In 1998 began a process to restore the instruments completely. The completion of work to the two instruments in the chancel led to the writing of the present study, which aims to give a summary of the building of the six organs at the Convent-Palace at Mafra and to present the results of the work in progress, including technical drawings, a complete list of the composition of the instruments and photographic documentation.
