Abstract

During the 16th and 17th centuries the Jesuits produced many scientific texts in Portugal that provide evidence of the high level of their thinking. Although there is no such evidence about their musical work, the role of music in evangelization and in the education in the Jesuit schools is well known. Several descriptions of the celebrations in honour of the Jesuit saints were printed between 1619 and 1737. Taking these as a starting point, the author looks for a pattern and seeks to understand the role of music in the Jesuit schools. References to music in the masses, processions and popular celebrations tell us how the Jesuits organized music in the great religious festivals and how the students took part in these celebrations.
