Abstract

In Portugal, there are three printed Passion books from the 16th Century: those by Diogo Fernandes Formoso (1543), Manuel Cardoso (1575), and Fr. Estêvão de Cristo (1595). All of them contain the accentus of Passions by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the Tenebrae Lessons as well as the Exultet for Holy Saturday. Some of them also give certain rubrics for Palm Sunday and Good Friday. In addition, Fernandes Formoso gives items from a complete hymn book, mostly in mensural notation, and Manuel Cardoso gives a complete version of the psalm invitatory in all of the Gregorian modes. Reference is also made to the specifically Portuguese tonus passionis, which, besides emphasizing certain phrases, gives the three Passion singers, Christ-Evangelist-Synagogue, F F-C’ as their recitation tones.
