Abstract

ln the wake of the floods that devastated Funchal and other coastal areas of Madeira in 1803 five organs were shipped to the island from the firm of Flight and Robson of London. Four of these exist today in churches at Câmara de Lobos, Porto da Cruz, São Vicente and São Pedro, Funchal. ln 1814, the London organ builder George Pike England (c.1765-1816), who had previously built an organ for the chapel of the Portuguese Embassy in London (1808), supplied an instrument for a new west gallery in the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte. It was probably his last work which survives in a state of greater integrity than examples in the United Kingdom. It is a one manual instrument of eight stops, which requires faithful repair and restoration. This article stems from a survey made in January 1996.
