Abstract

In the aftermath of Vatican II, the novelties of vernacular liturgy lead to a vast compositional activity in all Catholic countries. In Portugal, particularly in Lisbon, one of the key players in this action was Manuel Luís (1924-81). Although his chants (in particular, Psalms) are currently used from North to South of Portugal, the activity of Manuel Luís was centered in Lisbon, particularly in the context of the celebrations held at the Patriarchal Cathedral, in which the regular contact with Antoine Sibertin-Blanc (1930-2012), organist of that temple since 1965, was inevitable. For the congregation of Lisbon Cathedral, the harmonizations of Sibertin-Blanc would eventually become inseparable from the melodies of Manuel Luís.
