Abstract

This paper presents a complete edition of a recently discovered two-part Portuguese plainchant treatise, dated 1494, which is preserved in the Biblioteca Pública in Évora — Cód. CCXIII/1-40. The combined texts represent the earliest known Portuguese vernacular manual on plainchant and reveal much in common with earlier 15th-century Spanish plainchant treatises.
