Abstract

This article announces the discovery of a unique plan of part of the interior of the Capela Real in Lisbon dated 1649. It was found by the present author in the Biblioteca da Ajuda, bound into a volume of papers pertaining to the Portuguese royal household. The drawing, or perfil, would appear to consist of a plan for decorating the walls of the chapel interior with large areas of black velvet. Of particular interest is the information it provides for the positions of the royal tribunes at the back of the chapel as well as the area reserved for the chapel musicans which was situated at floor level, immediately below the tribunes. As yet, the origins of this particular plan are unknown.
