Abstract

Verdi's theatre is substantiated by crossreferences between sound elements and analogies in musical material which progressively define a dramatic frame. This huge structure is based on some ‘opening materiais’ (‘materiali di partenza’, Della Seta) exposed to the intuition (‘impressione’) of the listener, materials whose ‘path of significance’ can be easily followed. On these ‘opening materials’ Verdi develops several melodic segments, parts of scenes, up to the whole unfolding of the dramatic action, in order to obtain strong continuity, homogeneity and overall coherence. This target is reached with an unceasing evolution of Verdian dramaturgy: in this article two examples drawn from the central period are shown, in which one can follow the dramatic development of some ‘opening materiais’ contained in renowned rhythmic-melodic moments as ‘Di quella pira’ and ‘Amami, Alfredo’. The investigation involves comparison between sketches, nondefinitive and definitive versions.
